Stephen Perkins Artist Talk

Stephen Perkins has a lot of interesting things to say during his artist talk. He primarily talked about his background as an artist and the projects he does currently. He presented his ideas through a presentation and elaborated on his experiences through speech. Stephen was from England and talked about the school system at his school. One of his pieces, "this ain"t my scene", showed his turn to not being conventional. His art school also shaped his life career. Instead of being a painter because his instructor berated him, he became primarily a photographer even though he would dabble in other mediums. His time as an art therapist resonated with him in that he was able to draw a social benefit and meaning from his work while dealing with the patients. Unfortunately, the job wasn't for him due to it being a psychologically stressful situation over time. Stephen moved to San Francisco and got into visual anthropology. He was dealing with photography is not just an art setting, but a practical setting as well. This relates to McLuhan when he states, "Printing...provided the first uniformly repeatable "commodity," the first assembly line - mass production" (50). This is also related to one of his art projects where he prints out a bunch of white business cards and puts text on them like, "He lied." These cards are meant to be put anywhere and make you think. The most interesting thing I took from the lecture was his home galleries. I found it kind of weird because if you were someone just visiting his house, you could interpret his "gallery" as just decor in his bathroom or hallway. It was a unique idea though which connects to his persona of being nonconventional. Overall, I learned the unique ways different mediums of art can make an impact in different locations, whether that be international or in the comfort of your home.

  1. I also really found it interesting at how he described the art world without following typical convention. He found that he enjoys it most when he can create what he wants to create.
